The Melody of Death

The Melody of Death is an original radio play in which Mary Astor stars as the newly engaged Ann, who falls under the evil influence of a violin-playing gypsy.

Ann and her fiance David are in Lugo's Restaurant, and when the violinist comes over to their table and remarks how happy Ann looks she asks him to play her favourite tune. The gypsy refuses to play the tune for her though. He is aware that she has just got engaged and an old gypsy superstition warns that it is bad luck for a newly betrothed girl to hear that particular tune. If she does she will become haunted by the music and never stop hearing it. Worse still, she will become a slave to it and will even kill her lover is the music wants her to do so.

Ann and David take the gypsy's warning with a pinch of salt and, at their insistence, the gypsy does play for them and, of course, Ann does indeed become a slave to the music. But it is the gypsy's music, it is his tune that Ann is forced to dance to and it soon becomes murder for her.
