Devil Island
After
the death of her mother Anne Drake goes to live with her father in the
family home on Devil Island. It is her first visit to the island and
Anne has never met her father, but she receives a warm welcome just the
same and her father appears to be genuinely pleased to see her.
Drake
Manor is sombre-looking building, and there are no other homes on the
island, but for a while Anne finds happiness there. She spends a lot of
time reading with her father, and his wife, Hester, busies herself with
teaching Anne how to cook. When she takes her daily walk, Anne’s Uncle
Henry always accompanies her and, on the evenings, she and Henry spend
their time playing chess.
Things take a turn for the worse on
a dark stormy night, when Henry looks up from the chess board and tells
Anne that he can see his brother Richard at the window, beckoning for
him to go outside. It is not the idea of facing the elements that
scares Henry though; it is the fact that Richard has been dead for
fifteen years.
