The Hermit's Cave

The Author of Murder

Dr Russell has only seen his friend Hazel Clinth once since she got married and, although he is glad to receive a visit from her, he knows straight away that something is bothering her.

Hazel assures the doctor that she is fine, but she tells him that she is worried about her Husband, Lyman. After they got married Hazel went to live at Lyman’s home in the wilderness and at first everything was fine. Lyman was busy working on his new novel and he was very content. Then, after a few months had passed, he began to act in an odd manner and seemed to be living in fear of something. He also began to spend his nights locked inside the library. Hazel tells the doctor that she has no idea what the problem is, but she is afraid that it might drive Lyman mad if it doesn’t kill him first.

Being the good friend that he is, Russell aggress to visit the Clinths, and spend the weekend with them, so that he can get to the bottom of the problem and try to help Lyman. After he has spent some time with Lyman, Russell becomes convinced that, whatever the problem is, it has something to do with the library. And how right he is.
