Inner Sanctum Mysteries: The Melody of Death

The Melody of Death is an original radio play that was broadcast as part of the Inner Sanctum radio series. Mary Astor stars as the newly engaged Ann, who falls under the evil influence of a violin-playing gipsy.

Ann and her fiancé David are in Lugo’s Restaurant. When the violinist comes over to their table and remarks how happy Ann looks she asks him to play her favourite tune. The gipsy refuses to play the tune for her though. He is aware that she has just got engaged and there is an old gipsy superstition that warns it is bad luck for a newly betrothed girl to hear that particular tune. If she does she will become haunted by the music and never stop hearing it. Worse still, she will become a slave to it and will even kill her lover is the music wants her to do so.

Ann and David take the gipsy’s warning with a pinch of salt and, at their insistence, the gipsy does play for them and, of course, Ann does indeed become a slave to the music. But it is the gipsy’s music, it is his tune that Ann is forced to dance to and it soon becomes murder for her.
