The Entire Varney the Vampyre Book Is Now Available on the Site

Varney the Vampyre: or, the Feast of Blood is one of the most important works of vampire fiction. Serialized in penny dreadful form between 1845 and 1847 and later published as a three-volume book, the story’s influence can be seen in many later vampire tales, including Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

I’d always wanted to read Varney the Vampyre, but never got round to it. Last year I finally made the effort and, after having difficulty in finding quality online copies of the book, decided to add the story to this site as I read it—a chapter at a time.

This turned out to be a mammoth task. I began adding chapters in September 2025 and its taken me until August 2026 to get them all online. That’s a long time, but I was reading and adding other stories to the site as well, and also added some film reviews etc.

As of today, site visitors can read all the chapters of Varney the Vampyre, online, and at their own pace, right here. I’ve also provided a supplementary page that details some of the many errors and inconsistencies in the story. Now that I’ve finished reading the book, I plan to go through my notes and update the list of errors and inconsistencies, I may also add a Varney the Vampyre book review, so I’m not done with old Varney just yet.
