When Englishman, Simon Crutchley, goes to stay in France he takes a room at the back of the hotel D’Avignon, with a view of the garden. The garden is surrounded by a brick wall though, and little sunlight gets in. It is an unhealthy place and when he looks out of his window one night Simon notices a woman sitting on a bench in the garden. Her head is turned away and she seems to be in a state of complete despair. Simon becomes obsessed with the woman and wants desperately to see her face.
Despite the hotel manager’s best efforts to discourage him, in the end, Crutchley gets his wish. It would have been better for him if he had not. He used to have such lovely black hair.
